Dragon Quest Vs. Final Fantasy

If you know me, then you know that I am an absolutely massive fan of RPGs, especially JRPGs and when it comes to JRPGs there are two series that are the most popular and are considered by fans as some of the best, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Now alot of fans of both these series argue over which is the superior series. Well, in my own personal opinion I think the Dragon Quest Series is the superior series. Don't get me wrong, even though I think that the Final Fantasy series is extremely overrated, I do enjoy playing a good Final Fantasy game every now and then. Now I just want to point out that all of what you will see in this article is strictly opinion based, none of it is fact. So don't go all haywire on me. If you disagree with me then I respect your opinion, but I would appreciate it if in turn you would respect mine and not go crazy on me. Here are the top 4 reasons why I think that Dragon Quest is the superior series to Final Fantay. By the way, this isn't a top five list. This is just a random list in a random order of my reasons.

Reason #1: The Stories in the Dragon Quest games are far superior
Now don't get me wrong, I think that the stories in some of the Final Fantasy Games are excellent, such games such as FFIV, FFVI, as well as FFXII have pretty descent and for the most part well written characters and plots, but I just think that the stories in the DQ series are so much better. I guess the reasons for why is because the Stories in the DQ series for the most part are extremely simplistic, but they are told excellently and in my opinion they are told bettter than the FF series. Also, there is an extreme lack of melodrama in the DQ series. Now, if you like melodrama, thats fine, but for the most part I think the melodrama in the FF series is corny and extremely annoying. Also some of the characters in the DQ series are just extremely hilarious. In the FF series it's always dramatic, dark, and extremely intense. But in the DQ series, the sad, happy or angry emotions that the characters feel is for the most part extremely justified due to what happens to the characters. Also, the character development in the DQ games is extremely well handled. So you care for the characters.

Reason # 2: The Presentation of the Dragon Quest series is so Much Better
If you know me, then you know that I am a massive fan of anime. So as an anime fan, I absolutely love Akira Toriyama's art style. He has been the artist and character creater for the DQ series since it's beginning days on the Famicom/NES. Also, I am a massive fan of cell shaded graphics, and the DQ series has tons of games with this style. Games in the series such as DQ VIII are absolutely gorgeous. The FF series art style is ok. I personally feel like the game witht he best art style is FFXII. For some of the others, I just think it's ok.

Reason #3: The Monsters in Dragon Quest are More Interesting and Fun
As I have said, I am a huge fan of Akira Toriyama's art style, and I think that he just went all out when he created the monsters for the DQ series. For, example in DQVIII, there is a monster named "One Knight Stand". How can you not love that? While at the same time, I feel like the monsters in the FF series are forgettable and just plain weard looking.

Reason #4: The Gameplay in Dragon Quest is Far Superior
The gameplay in the DQ series is superior for one reason, they have never changed their gameplay. It's always stayed the same good old turned based JRPG combat system that used to be the go to system back in the day. But, know other games series like the FF series, keep changing into complicated and stupid combat systems. Know despite how much I love FF XII gameplay, I can't stand FFXIII gameplay, and I think FFXIV gameplay is going to suck new loads of poop(in my opinion). But DQ has stayed the same way since it's inception. I do like change, but I respect the DQ series for not fixing what wasn't broken.

So in conclusion, I think the DQ series is superior due too the fact that I think the gameplay is superior, the monsters are more interesting, the art style is superior, and the stories in the DQ series are better.
