What Happened To Twin Galaxies - My World Record Gone?!?

February 5, 2014 3:39 pm - DinkyDana

Earlier today, I went to the Twin Galaxies website to check on my Contra NES world record. I wanted to see if anyone else had gotten the high score and I was surprised to see that the site no longer exists!

Twin Galaxies has been a reputable resource for Video Game World Records for over 30 years. Walter Day started his own arcade back in 1982. On February 9, 1982, his high score records were released publicly as the Twin Galaxies National Scoreboard. Later, in 1984, the records were published in the Guinness Book of World Records. Still today, Guinness World Records officially recognizes Twin Galaxies as the video game high score authority.

While researching the reasons behind the website being gone, I did not find much concrete information. Apparently, ownership of the website was transferred to Jourdan Adler, Richie Knucklez, and Websignia (the web hosting/site creation team that built TG's new site in 2013). There is a quote from Richie Knucklez posted on the KLOV forums:

"over the past week, I have received numerous emails and phone calls concerning Twin Galaxies and my involvement. The day after I returned home from the Kong Off 3 I was informed by phone call I was no longer part of Twin Galaxies. In all honesty, in the short time it seemed like I had my hand on one of the ropes. I did not. I had nothing to do with the decision to charge for submissions, and I never once had access to the database......Whenever there are partnerships involved, different egos clash and blame gets thrown. Large knives end up landing in unexpecting backs."

It is a shame to hear what has happened with Twin Galaxies. I have met Walter Day a few times and he was very accomodating with my own world record being added to their database. Walter left Twin Galaxies in 2010 to pursue a career in music. Whether or not him leaving has led to this downfall or not, I will be keeping tabs on this situation and I hope that Twin Galaxies will return to it's former glory. If it does not return, what happens to my world record? Are the database world record rights sold to another buyer? Time will tell.
